Evolutionary Genomics: Transdomain Gene Transfers
نویسنده
چکیده
Biologists have until now conceded that bacterial gene transfer to multicellular animals is relatively uncommon in Nature. A new study showing promiscuous insertions of bacterial endosymbiont genes into invertebrate genomes ushers in a shift in this paradigm.

Describing ancient horizontal gene transfers at the nucleotide and gene levels by comparative pathogenicity island genometrics
MOTIVATION Lateral gene transfer is a major mechanism contributing to bacterial genome dynamics and pathovar emergence via pathogenicity island (PAI) spreading. However, since few of these genomic exchanges are experimentally reproducible, it is difficult to establish evolutionary scenarios for the successive PAI transmissions between bacterial genera. Methods initially developed at the gene an...
متن کاملComparative and Evolutionary Genomics
Motivation: An algorithm for comparative analysis of multiple trees reconstructed for representative protein families are discussed. This algorithm is based on the hypotheses of gene loss and horizontal gene transfers and uses stochastic methods and optimization. Some practical results are discussed. We describe a species tree comprising 40 prokaryotic organisms constructed by our algorithm on ...
متن کاملNothing in Evolution Makes Sense Except in the Light of Genomics: Read–Write Genome Evolution as an Active Biological Process
The 21st century genomics-based analysis of evolutionary variation reveals a number of novel features impossible to predict when Dobzhansky and other evolutionary biologists formulated the neo-Darwinian Modern Synthesis in the middle of the last century. These include three distinct realms of cell evolution; symbiogenetic fusions forming eukaryotic cells with multiple genome compartments; horiz...
متن کاملEvolutionary genomics: Thermotoga heats up lateral gene transfer
Prokaryotes exchange genes on a regular basis, especially under highly selective conditions (such as in the presence of antibiotics). These DNA transfer events have been appreciated by biologists for some time now. Indeed, it was recognized early on that this process could have profound implications for the evolution of microbes and our ability to trace their history, yet most microbiologists m...
متن کاملAn Efficient Algorithm for Gene/Species Trees Parsimonious Reconciliation with Losses, Duplications and Transfers
Motivation) Tree reconciliation is an approach that explains the discrepancies between two evolutionary trees by a number of events such as speciations, duplications, transfers and losses. It has important applications in ecology, biogeography and genomics, for instance to decipher relationships between homologous sequences. (Results) We provide a fast and exact reconciliation algorithm accordi...
